{"id":46043,"date":"2016-03-14T19:59:06","date_gmt":"2016-03-14T19:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=46043"},"modified":"2016-03-14T19:59:06","modified_gmt":"2016-03-14T19:59:06","slug":"what-would-it-mean-to-have-a-hapa-bachelorette","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=46043","title":{"rendered":"What Would It Mean To Have A &#8216;Hapa&#8217; Bachelorette?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/codeswitch\/2016\/03\/13\/470124738\/what-would-it-mean-to-have-a-hapa-bachelorette\" target=\"_blank\">What Would It Mean To Have A &#8216;Hapa&#8217; Bachelorette?<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/codeswitch\" target=\"_blank\">Code Switch: Frontiers of Race, Culture and Ethnicity<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\" target=\"_blank\">National Public Radio<\/a><br \/>\n2016-03-13<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/akemijohnson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Akemi Johnson<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On a recent episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Bachelor_(U.S._TV_series)\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Bachelor<\/em><\/a>, the ABC dating reality show that ends its 20th season Monday night, contestant Caila Quinn brings Ben Higgins home to meet her interracial family.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Have you ever met Filipinos before?&#8221; Quinn&#8217;s mother asks, leading Higgins into a dining room where the table is filled with traditional Filipino food.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know,&#8221; he replies. &#8220;No. I don&#8217;t think so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As they sit around the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adobo\" target=\"_blank\">adobo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pancit\" target=\"_blank\">pancit<\/a>, Quinn&#8217;s father talks to Higgins, white man to white man. What comes with dating Quinn, the father says, &#8220;is a very special Philippine community.&#8221; Quinn grimaces.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had no idea what I was getting into when I married Caila&#8217;s mother,&#8221; the father says. But being married to a Filipina, he assures Higgins, has been &#8220;the most fun&#8221; and &#8220;magical.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This scene can be read as an attempt by <em>The Bachelor<\/em> franchise to dispel criticisms (and the memory of a 2012 lawsuit) concerning its whitewashed casts. It shows how these attempts can be clunky at best, offensive and creepy at worst.<\/p>\n<p>Quinn&#8217;s run also demonstrates how, as this rose-strewn, fantasy-fueled romance machine tries to include more people of color, diversification looks like biracial Asian-American \u2014 often known as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=329\" target=\"_blank\">hapa<\/a>&#8221; \u2014 women&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Mixed-race Asian-white women become the perfect vehicles for diversity on this show because they are &#8220;white enough to present to the family,&#8221; as Morning said, while still being exotic enough to fill a quota. Morning suggested they also get a boost from the model minority myth and the recent idea that being multiracial is &#8220;cool.&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/cjdept.unm.edu\/people\/faculty\/profile\/myra-washington.html\" target=\"_blank\">Myra Washington<\/a>, assistant professor of communication at the University of New Mexico, predicted an increase in black contestants if Quinn becomes the bachelorette. &#8220;Not <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wesley_Snipes\" target=\"_blank\">Wesley Snipes<\/a> black, because this is still TV,&#8221; she said. She guessed there would be more mixed-race African-Americans, brown-skinned men, Latinos.
