{"id":46117,"date":"2016-03-20T16:33:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-20T16:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=46117"},"modified":"2016-03-20T16:33:00","modified_gmt":"2016-03-20T16:33:00","slug":"jackie-kay-unveiled-as-the-new-national-poet-or-makar-of-scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=46117","title":{"rendered":"Jackie Kay unveiled as the new National Poet, or Makar, of Scotland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/homenews\/14344251.Jackie_Kay_unveiled_as_the_new_National_Poet__or_Makar__of_Scotland\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jackie Kay unveiled as the new National Poet, or Makar, of Scotland<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\" target=\"_blank\">The Herald<\/a><br \/>\nGlasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom<br \/>\n2016-03-15<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"mailto:phil.miller@theherald.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Phil Miller<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/homenews\/14344251.Jackie_Kay_unveiled_as_the_new_National_Poet__or_Makar__of_Scotland\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/resources\/images\/4838660.jpg?display=1&amp;htype=0&amp;type=mc3\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Poet and author\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jackie_Kay\" target=\"_blank\">Jackie Kay<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>The acclaimed writer <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jackie_Kay\" target=\"_blank\">Jackie Kay<\/a> is the new <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Makar\" target=\"_blank\">National Poet<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scotland\" target=\"_blank\">Scotland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Kay, who lives in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manchester\" target=\"_blank\">Manchester<\/a>, who was awarded an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Order_of_the_British_Empire\" target=\"_blank\">MBE<\/a> for her services to literature in 2006, will succeed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liz_Lochhead\" target=\"_blank\">Liz Lochhead<\/a> as the National Poet.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Kay said she spend around half her time in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glasgow\" target=\"_blank\">Glasgow<\/a>, the city where her parents live.<\/p>\n<p>The final selection of Ms Kay was made by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicola_Sturgeon\" target=\"_blank\">First Minister Nicola Sturgeon<\/a> and former first ministers <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alex_Salmond\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Salmond<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jack_McConnell\" target=\"_blank\">Lord McConnell of Glenscorrodale<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_McLeish\" target=\"_blank\">Henry McLeish<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The First Minister made the announcement at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottishpoetrylibrary.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scottish Poetry Library<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edinburgh\" target=\"_blank\">Edinburgh<\/a> where Ms Kay read one of her own poems, \u2018Between the Dee and the Don\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Kay was born in Edinburgh and raised in Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p>She said she would like to write a poem for the re-opening of the Scottish Parliament later this year, after the Holyrood elections, as well as highlight the plight of refugees.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made by Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister, who said: &#8220;Poetry is part of Scotland\u2019s culture and history, it celebrates our language and can evoke strong emotions and memories in all of us&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/homenews\/14344251.Jackie_Kay_unveiled_as_the_new_National_Poet__or_Makar__of_Scotland\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jackie Kay unveiled as the new National Poet, or Makar, of Scotland The Herald Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom 2016-03-15 Phil Miller Poet and author\u00a0Jackie Kay The acclaimed writer Jackie Kay is the new National Poet for Scotland.
