The acclaimed writer Jackie Kay<\/a> is the new National Poet<\/a> for Scotland<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ms Kay, who lives in Manchester<\/a>, who was awarded an MBE<\/a> for her services to literature in 2006, will succeed Liz Lochhead<\/a> as the National Poet.<\/p>\n

Ms Kay said she spend around half her time in Glasgow<\/a>, the city where her parents live.<\/p>\n

The final selection of Ms Kay was made by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon<\/a> and former first ministers Alex Salmond<\/a>, Lord McConnell of Glenscorrodale<\/a> and Henry McLeish<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The First Minister made the announcement at the Scottish Poetry Library<\/a> in Edinburgh<\/a> where Ms Kay read one of her own poems, \u2018Between the Dee and the Don\u2019.<\/p>\n

Ms Kay was born in Edinburgh and raised in Glasgow.<\/p>\n

She said she would like to write a poem for the re-opening of the Scottish Parliament later this year, after the Holyrood elections, as well as highlight the plight of refugees.<\/p>\n

The announcement was made by Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister, who said: “Poetry is part of Scotland\u2019s culture and history, it celebrates our language and can evoke strong emotions and memories in all of us…<\/p>\n
