{"id":462,"date":"2009-08-23T04:13:32","date_gmt":"2009-08-23T04:13:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=462"},"modified":"2012-05-28T00:49:56","modified_gmt":"2012-05-28T00:49:56","slug":"marginal-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=462","title":{"rendered":"Marginal Man"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A <strong>&#8216;Marginal Man&#8217;<\/strong> is a fictional archetype created in 1927 by sociologist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Ezra_Park\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Ezra Park<\/a> (1864-1944)\u00a0(and further developed by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Everett_V_Stonequist\" target=\"_blank\">Everett Stonequist<\/a> (1901-1979)) as\u00a0a way\u00a0 to describe a person descended from two &#8220;opposing&#8221; ethnic or racial groups.\u00a0 He stated, &#8220;<em>The marginal man&#8230;is one whom fate has condemned to live in two societies and in two, not merely different but antagonistic cultures&#8230;.his mind is the crucible in which two different and refractory cultures may be said to melt and, either wholly or in part, fuse.<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 The arc for &#8216;Marginal Man&#8217; was similar to that of\u00a0 the &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=454\" target=\"_blank\">Tragic Mulatto<\/a>&#8216; because he too, attempted to &#8220;pass&#8221; as white, however he could change course and take a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=86\" target=\"_blank\">hypodescendent<\/a> path and if he were fortunate become a leader of his &#8220;lesser&#8221; lot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">See, Everett V.
