The shield was modeled after the crest of the slaveholding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royallhouse.org\/the-royalls\/\" target=\"_blank\">Royall family<\/a>, whose fortune endowed Harvard\u2019s first law professorship; the shield\u2019s removal was the first of a list of demands issued in December by student group <a href=\"https:\/\/reclaimharvardlaw.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reclaim Harvard Law School<\/a>. But HLS has not, so far, acted on the group\u2019s larger, more controversial demands\u2014among them, creating a program in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Critical_race_theory\" target=\"_blank\">critical race theory<\/a>, a legal-studies movement with origins at Harvard in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday night, Reclaim HLS hosted a critical race theory teach-in by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/khiara-m-bridges\/\" target=\"_blank\">Khiara Bridges<\/a>, an associate law professor at Boston University, modeled on how she teaches first-year criminal law. \u201cWe\u2019re not pretending that we\u2019re disconnected from the real world,\u201d Bridges said as she opened her presentation, alluding to one of the motivating goals of critical race theory: to link activism with academics.
