But the racism I experienced was not part of the dreams of 1916\u2019s revolutionaries<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I grew up singing Irish rebel songs. One of the first ones I learned, which seared an impression on my young mind, was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Connolly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Connolly<\/a>. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Z1tWwjWFmh8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">haunting ballad the folk musician Christy Moore<\/a> laments the 1916 execution of Connolly, the Easter Rising revolutionary, and hero of the working man:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Where oh where is our <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Connolly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Connolly<\/a>?<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Where oh where is that gallant man?<\/em><br \/>\n<em> He\u2019s gone to organise the union<\/em><br \/>\n<em> That working men they might yet be free.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The song outlines the capture of Connolly, a central figure in the<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Easter_Rising\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 1916 Easter Rising<\/a>. On <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Easter_Monday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Easter Monday<\/a>, 24 April 1916, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Irish_republicanism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Irish republicans <\/a>desperate to end the British occupation of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ireland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ireland<\/a> mounted an insurrection in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dublin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dublin<\/a>. British forces, with their vastly superior military advantage, quickly crushed the rebels. Nevertheless, these events \u2013 the centenary of which was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/mar\/27\/easter-rising-centenary-to-be-marked-in-dublin-gpo-amid-heavy-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commemorated this weekend<\/a> \u2013 were the catalyst for a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Irish_War_of_Independence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long fight for Irish independence<\/a> that was eventually achieved in 1922&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2016\/mar\/29\/irish-white-easter-rising-ireland-racism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m Irish but I\u2019m not white.
