With \u2018Keanu,\u2019 Key & Peele Break Into Feature Films \u2014 With Kittens in Tow<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

There is no longer \u201cKey & Peele<\/a>,\u201d the razor-sharp Comedy Central<\/a> sketch series that ended in September. There are only Keegan-Michael Key <\/a>and Jordan Peele<\/a>, the comic actors and writers who used the five seasons of that show to shine a satirical spotlight<\/a> on racial stereotypes and injustice (not to mention the increasingly distinctive names of college football players<\/a>). And so the two men started pursuing their individual career paths.<\/p>\n

A few months later, those paths have brought Mr. Key and Mr. Peele back together on their first movie, \u201cKeanu<\/a>,\u201d which Warner Bros. will release on Friday, April 29. In this comedy<\/a>, they star as cousins in Los Angeles<\/a> who take in an adorable kitten they name Keanu. (It can mean \u201ccool breeze,\u201d<\/a> too, you know.) But, unaware that Keanu once belonged to a notorious drug lord, the strait-laced pair must navigate the city\u2019s criminal underbelly to reclaim Keanu when he is stolen from them.<\/p>\n

…There\u2019s a running idea in \u201cKeanu\u201d about black men who don\u2019t fit traditional stereotypes having to navigate a world of stereotypical characters. Is that drawn in any way from your real-life experiences?<\/strong><\/p>\n

PEELE<\/strong> Part of it is a commentary on the lack of representation in movies. Certainly, there\u2019s an overwhelming amount of stereotypes in movies. We\u2019ve placed ourselves in a more typical world of Hollywood stereotypes.<\/p>\n

KEY<\/strong> African-American culture\u2019s not a monolith. You could take 56 pictures, and there\u2019s one picture where you make this face [contorts his features], and that\u2019s the picture they pick. \u201cHe loves to make that face!\u201d No, dude, you didn\u2019t look at the other 55 pictures. If we\u2019re black nerds, we write from a point of view being black nerds. But we\u2019re still African-American. In my life, it\u2019s been frustrating when someone says, \u201cYou\u2019re not black enough.\u201d And I\u2019m going: I\u2019m black enough to not get that cab you also didn\u2019t get. They didn\u2019t pick me up either…<\/p>\n
