{"id":4680,"date":"2010-01-22T04:24:31","date_gmt":"2010-01-22T04:24:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=4680"},"modified":"2010-01-22T18:50:20","modified_gmt":"2010-01-22T18:50:20","slug":"adding-up-preoccupations-about-color-race-in-literature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=4680","title":{"rendered":"Adding up preoccupations about color, race in literature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emory.edu\/EMORY_REPORT\/erarchive\/1999\/February\/erfebruary.22\/2_22_99calculus.html\" target=\"_blank\">Adding up preoccupations about color, race in literature<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emory.edu\/EMORY_REPORT\" target=\"_blank\">Emory Report<\/a><br \/>\nEmory University<br \/>\n1999-02-22<br \/>\nVolume 51, Number 21<\/p>\n<p>The class listed in Emory&#8217;s spring course atlas as &#8220;The Calculus of Color&#8221; might at first sound like an art class on color theory, but instructor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcnj.edu\/~english\/faculty\/jackson.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cassandra Jackson<\/a> intends for her class to explore <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=451\" target=\"_blank\">mulatto<\/a> figures and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=450\" target=\"_blank\">miscegenation<\/a> in 19th and 20th century American literature.<\/p>\n<p>The course takes its title from a chapter in <a href=\"http:\/\/aaas.fas.harvard.edu\/faculty\/werner_sollors.html\" target=\"_blank\">Werner Sollors<\/a>&#8216; book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=2090\" target=\"_blank\">Neither Black Nor White, a thematic exploration of biracial characters in European and American literature<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said students were drawn to the course for specific reasons. &#8220;A number of my students felt as though biracial people are very much a part of American culture and history, yet they hold an invisible space. Personal history also had an influence. A few are biracial or have a biracial parent. The students work hard and are really committed.
