Chavez<\/a>, a mestiza born and raised in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Central_Valley_(California)\" target=\"_blank\">California Central Valley<\/a>, is the author of the chapbook <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=52589\" target=\"_blank\"><em>All Day, Talking<\/em><\/a> (Dancing Girl Press, 2014). She holds a Ph.D. in English with a focus in poetry and Ethnic Studies from the University of Nebraska \u2013 Lincoln. Her work can be found or is forthcoming in the anthologies <em>Bared: An Anthology on Bras and Breasts<\/em> and <em>Political Punch: The Politics of Identity<\/em>, as well as the journals <em>North Dakota Quarterly<\/em>, <em>Pittsburgh Poetry Review<\/em>, and <em>The Boiler Journal<\/em>, among others. Her debut full-length collection, <em>Hands That Break &amp; Scar<\/em>, is forthcoming from Sundress Publications. She is a proud member of the Macondo Writers Workshop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DS: Why do you write poetry?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SC: As a kid growing up in a mobile home on the west side of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fresno,_California\" target=\"_blank\">Fresno, CA<\/a>, when I was upset or couldn\u2019t sleep, I read. Mostly prose, novels and the occasional short story; they were about upper class people, romance, things that take place in forests, or vampire\/horror \u2013 always an escape. When I was done with a book, it felt like I was transported back against my will.
