{"id":46993,"date":"2016-05-15T22:31:41","date_gmt":"2016-05-15T22:31:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=46993"},"modified":"2016-05-15T22:32:28","modified_gmt":"2016-05-15T22:32:28","slug":"stranger-in-the-village-a-visual-essay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=46993","title":{"rendered":"Stranger In The Village &#8211; A Visual Essay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phoebeboswell.com\/stranger-in-the-village\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Stranger In The Village &#8211; A Visual Essay<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phoebeboswell.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Phoebe Boswell<\/strong><\/a>, Visual Artist<br \/>\n2015-12-15<\/p>\n<p><strong>Artist&#8217;s Talk at <a href=\"http:\/\/goteborg.se\/wps\/portal\/blas\" target=\"_blank\">Bla Stallet Konsthallen<\/a>,<br \/>\nAngered, Gothenburg, Sweden<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>September 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The term \u2018residency\u2019 is an interesting one to me &#8211; it offers a sense of belonging, of being present, resident, which is artificial of course since you are more often than not placed somewhere you have no connection with, no ties to, no friends in, and no reason for being there, except of course to make work. <em>Belonging is something I think a lot about in my work.<\/em> A tutor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slade_School_of_Fine_Art\" target=\"_blank\">Slade<\/a> once said to me that you make work to \u2018fill a hole\u2019, and the difficulty lies in determining within us what that hole is. Mine, I realise, is \u2018home\u2019, or a lack of it, and I\u2019m fascinated by how, as human beings, we each individually negotiate our personal sense of belonging.<\/p>\n<p>To give a little history, I\u2019m from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kenya\" target=\"_blank\">Kenya<\/a>.
