And it immediately made the case why the film has to be considered one of this year\u2019s first major awards contenders.<\/p>\n<p>Given the material, Nichols could have delivered a standard-issue courtroom drama, culminating with soaring oratory before the nation\u2019s highest court. But he chose to take a different route \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_Liberties_Union\" target=\"_blank\">American Civil Liberties Union<\/a>, agreeing to take on the case, doesn\u2019t enter the picture until more than half-way through the two-hour-three-minute movie.
