Her father, Edwin \u201cTeddy\u201d Horne, who worked in the gambling trade, left the fam\u00adily when Lena was three. Her mother, Edna, was an act\u00adress with an African Amer\u00adican theater troupe and traveled extens\u00adively. Horne was mainly raised by her grand\u00adpar\u00adents, Cora Cal\u00adhoun and Edwin Horne. Yet, she still moved a great deal in her early years because her mother often took her with her on the road. They lived in vari\u00adous parts of the South before Horne was returned to her grand\u00adpar\u00adents\u2019 home in 1931. After they died, Horne lived with a friend of her mother\u2019s, Laura Rol\u00adlock. Shortly there\u00adafter Edna remar\u00adried and Horne moved in with her mother and her mother\u2019s new hus\u00adband. The con\u00adstant mov\u00ading res\u00adul\u00adted in Lena hav\u00ading an edu\u00adca\u00adtion that was often inter\u00adrup\u00adted. She atten\u00added vari\u00adous small-town, segreg\u00adated (sep\u00adar\u00adated by race) school\u2019s when in the South with her mother.
