The government of Ghana<\/a> will ban all products containing hydroquinone<\/a> this summer.<\/em><\/p>\n

Colorism<\/a>, that which privileges lighter skin over darker, is an issue that not only affects African Americans, but pretty much all people of color around the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n

From India<\/a> to Compton<\/a>, Brazil<\/a> to Belize<\/a>, one of the ways in which colorism rears its ugly head is in skin bleaching<\/a>. We have all seen photos where celebrities such as Dominican baseball player Sammy Sosa<\/a> or Nigerian-Cameroonian pop singer Dencia<\/a> bleached their beautiful brown skin to odd shades not found in nature, ostensibly for beauty and prestige. As far back as the 1990s, the Jamaican dancehall song \u201cDem a Bleach<\/a>\u201d talked about the phenomenon of using chemicals to alter the color of brown skin.<\/p>\n

But the West African<\/a> nation of Ghana<\/a> is putting the kibosh<\/a> on that…<\/p>\n
