But in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York<\/a> a blind man can find his way across the city by his nose, by the odors of food rising from the streets and through open windows. His ears can take him anywhere across the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Borough_(New_York_City)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five boroughs<\/a>. Even when the language spoken is English, he can tell the difference in the accents. He knows he is either uptown or downtown, in African American <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harlem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harlem<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Harlem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spanish Harlem<\/a>, in Caribbean <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklyn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brooklyn<\/a> or in East Asian <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Queens<\/a>. He knows when he enters the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_Anglo-Saxon_Protestant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WASP<\/a> enclave, or the territories carved out by Europeans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think you are the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Nations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations<\/a>?\u201d Tony sneered when Anna claimed ancestors from around the globe. \u201cIn America, you are black. Don\u2019t go thinking other people see their relatives in you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tony is African American. If other bloods run through his veins, he pretends not to know. His Africanness comes before his Americanness, he said to Anna.
