{"id":47309,"date":"2016-06-04T21:25:45","date_gmt":"2016-06-04T21:25:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=47309"},"modified":"2016-06-04T21:25:45","modified_gmt":"2016-06-04T21:25:45","slug":"social-practice-art-challenges-the-status-quo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=47309","title":{"rendered":"Social-practice art challenges the status quo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.winnipegfreepress.com\/arts-and-life\/entertainment\/arts\/social-practice-art-challenges-the-status-quo-381275041.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Social-practice art challenges the status quo<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.winnipegfreepress.com\" target=\"_blank\">The Winnipeg Free Press<\/a><br \/>\n2016-05-30<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"mailto:Alison.Gillmor@freepress.mb.ca\" target=\"_blank\">Alison Gillmor<\/a><\/strong>, Writer &#8211; Arts and Life<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.winnipegfreepress.com\/arts-and-life\/entertainment\/arts\/social-practice-art-challenges-the-status-quo-381275041.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media.winnipegfreepress.com\/images\/750327.jpg\" width=\"550\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcadams.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">KC Adams\u2019<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcadams.net\/art\/photography\/phtotal.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Perception<\/em><\/a> series, 2014-15.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><em>Adams&#8217; portraits blend personal, political<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Even if you don\u2019t regularly visit art galleries, you probably saw some of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcadams.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">KC Adams\u2019<\/a> work in the weeks following the notorious <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macleans.ca\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em><\/a> magazine article that labelled <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Winnipeg\" target=\"_blank\">Winnipeg<\/a> &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/news\/canada\/welcome-to-winnipeg-where-canadas-racism-problem-is-at-its-worst\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canada\u2019s most racist city.<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcadams.net\/art\/photography\/phtotal.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Perception<\/em><\/a>, a photographic series the visual artist started in 2014, was all over the place, challenging stereotypes about indigenous people from bus shelters, billboards, and across social media.<\/p>\n<p>Using black-and-white photographic diptychs, Adams shot each of her subjects twice. In the first image, the faces are accompanied with ugly words such as &#8220;Squaw,&#8221; &#8220;Victim&#8221; and &#8220;Government Mooch.&#8221; In the second image, the subjects \u2014 usually looking much happier \u2014 offer up their own descriptions of themselves (&#8220;golfer,&#8221; &#8220;homeowner,&#8221; &#8220;taxpayer,&#8221; &#8220;father,&#8221; &#8220;mother,&#8221; &#8220;sundancer&#8221;). The two-part images are straight-up, immediate and effective.<\/p>\n<p>Adams, who is of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cree\" target=\"_blank\">Cree<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ojibwe\" target=\"_blank\">Ojibway<\/a>, Scottish, and English descent, was thrilled to see the works on city streets, where average Winnipeggers might view them while waiting for a bus, grabbing some lunch or going to a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Winnipeg_Jets\" target=\"_blank\">Jets<\/a> game. &#8220;(<em>Perception<\/em>) is not geared toward the art world,&#8221; Adams explains. &#8220;It\u2019s geared toward the public.&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winnipegfreepress.com\/arts-and-life\/entertainment\/arts\/social-practice-art-challenges-the-status-quo-381275041.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Social-practice art challenges the status quo The Winnipeg Free Press 2016-05-30 Alison Gillmor, Writer &#8211; Arts and Life From KC Adams\u2019 Perception series, 2014-15.
