This exhibit presents patchwork and textile-based paintings by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laurakina.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Kina<\/a> through moving autobiographical pieces that examine mixed race identities, indigenous communities, colonization, and globalized pop culture\u2013all in the form of traditional craft practices. Images feature deconstructed articles of clothing, from fleeting moments and memories of specific events to time-honored symbols.<\/p>\n<p>Kina explains,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMy artwork focuses on themes of distance, belonging and cultural reclamation\u2026 Taken together, the works are about islands of diaspora and explore themes of transnational family ties and heritage tourism, mixed-ness, ethnic pride and solidarity, military and colonial histories, and current geopolitical military\/environment issues in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Okinawa_Prefecture\" target=\"_blank\">Okinawa<\/a> and Hawai\u2019i.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Kina is Vincent de Paul Professor of Art, Media, &amp; Design at DePaul University in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago<\/a> and co-founder of the biennial <a href=\"http:\/\/www.criticalmixedracestudies.org\" target=\"_blank\">Critical Mixed Race Studies conference<\/a>. She co-authored <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=22829\" target=\"_blank\"><em>War Baby\/Love Child: Mixed Race Asian American Art<\/em><\/a> (University of Washington Press, 2013) and acts as reviews editor for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brill.com\/products\/journal\/asian-diasporic-visual-cultures-and-americas\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Asian Diasporic Visual Cultures and the Americas<\/em><\/a>. She is working on a forthcoming anthology <em>Queering Contemporary Asian American Art<\/em>.
