Though it wasn\u2019t new, of course, somehow it\u00a0caught <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinema_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tinseltown\u2019s<\/a> attention and a slew of films were made, almost all them dealing\u00a0with women in particular, who passed for white and the tragedies and sorrow\u00a0that they encountered.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elia_Kazan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elia Kazan\u2019s<\/a> &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pinky_(1949_film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pinky<\/a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lost_Boundaries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lost Boundaries<\/a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imitation_of_Life_(1959_film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Imitation Of Life<\/a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Band_of_Angels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Band\u00a0of Angels<\/a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Night_of_the_Quarter_Moon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Night of the Quarter Moon<\/a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/I_Passed_for_White\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I Passed for White<\/a>,&#8221; and the would-be &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gone_with_the_Wind_(film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gone with the Wind<\/a>&#8221; rip-off, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raintree_County_(film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raintree County<\/a>,&#8221;\u00a0with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elizabeth_Taylor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elizabeth Taylor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montgomery_Clift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montgomery\u00a0Clift<\/a>, which, technically may not be a &#8220;passing&#8221; movie, though it deals with a\u00a0pre-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Civil war<\/a>, antebellum <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_belle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Southern belle<\/a> (Taylor), who goes slowly insane\u00a0because she believes her real mother was a slave, who was her father\u2019s lover (turns\u00a0out that she wasn\u2019t, but Taylor dies anyway for all her grief).<\/p>\n<p>But, for my money, the real doozy of the passing-for-white\u00a0films wasn\u2019t from Hollywood, but came\u00a0instead from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Kingdom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.K.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m referring to the 1959 British mystery detective film &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sapphire_(film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sapphire<\/a>,&#8221; directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basil_Dearden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Basil Dearden<\/a>, who specialized, during the late 50\u2032s and 60\u2032s, in films\u00a0with controversial subject matter, such as his 1961 film &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victim_(1961_film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victim<\/a>,&#8221; which dealt with a\u00a0successful and closeted gay barrister who is being blackmailed, and fights back\u00a0against his tormentors.
