{"id":47583,"date":"2016-06-12T01:25:48","date_gmt":"2016-06-12T01:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=47583"},"modified":"2016-07-08T03:38:36","modified_gmt":"2016-07-08T03:38:36","slug":"texas-slave-passes-as-mexican-millionaire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=47583","title":{"rendered":"Texas slave passes as Mexican millionaire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/entertainment\/arts-culture\/books\/article\/Texas-slave-passes-as-Mexican-millionaire-7965637.php\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Texas slave passes as Mexican millionaire<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\" target=\"_blank\">San Antonio Express-News<\/a><br \/>\nSan Antonio, Texas<br \/>\n2016-06-11<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto: therealjoeo@yahoo.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Joe O\u2019Connell<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Former slave passes as Mexican millionaire<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Historian <a href=\"http:\/\/karljacoby.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Karl Jacoby<\/a> was driving near the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico%E2%80%93United_States_border\" target=\"_blank\">Texas-Mexico border<\/a> when he was stopped by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Border_Patrol\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Border Patrol<\/a>, the agency charged with keeping Mexicans out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\">United States<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He explained, to their dismay, that he was writing a book about a Texan who had tried desperately to cross into <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico\" target=\"_blank\">Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the completed book, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=44426\" target=\"_blank\">The Strange Career of William Ellis<\/a>,\u201d Jacoby has pieced together of the life a former slave who transformed himself into a wealthy Mexican.<\/p>\n<p>Ellis was born to a mixed-race mother on a cotton plantation in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victoria,_Texas\" target=\"_blank\">Victoria<\/a> one year before slavery ended, but found transformation in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Antonio\" target=\"_blank\">San Antonio<\/a>, then the hub of commerce between the United States and Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was born \u2018in between\u2019 in multiple ways,\u201d Jacoby said. \u201cThere was this fault line between slavery and freedom and what that might mean.
