Credit Matt Sayles\/Invision, via Associated Press<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/2016\/06\/26\/us\/ap-us-bet-awards-list.html\" target=\"_blank\">BET Awards<\/a> Sunday featured tributes to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prince_(musician)\" target=\"_blank\">Prince<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad_Ali\" target=\"_blank\">Muhammad Ali<\/a>, and a performance by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/deray\/status\/747440504401367040\" target=\"_blank\">Beyonc\u00e9 and Kendrick Lamar<\/a>. But this year, the actor <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jesse_Williams_(actor)\" target=\"_blank\">Jesse Williams<\/a> commanded the spotlight with an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bet.com\/video\/betawards\/2016\/acceptance-speeches\/jesse-williams-receives-humanitarian-award.html\" target=\"_blank\">impassioned speech<\/a> calling for an end to police killings, racial inequality and cultural appropriation.<\/p>\n<p>His was far from the only political statement of the evening: With the words \u201cDon\u2019t Trump America\u201d written on his back, the singer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Usher_(singer)\" target=\"_blank\">Usher<\/a> used his performance to make a statement against <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donald_Trump\" target=\"_blank\">Donald J. Trump<\/a>. And when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taraji_P._Henson\" target=\"_blank\">Taraji P. Henson<\/a>, the star of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Empire_(2015_TV_series)\" target=\"_blank\">Empire<\/a>,\u201d accepted her best actress award, she also warned the audience about Mr. Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2009, Mr. Williams has been played the role of Dr. Jackson Avery on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grey%27s_Anatomy\" target=\"_blank\">Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/a>.\u201d When he is not working on the set of the hospital drama, Mr. Williams, a former teacher, champions causes related to civil rights. He starred in and produced \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bet.com\/shows\/stay-woke-the-movement-for-black-lives-matter.html\" target=\"_blank\">Stay Woke: The Black Lives Matter Movement<\/a>,\u201d a documentary that premiered last month on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BET\" target=\"_blank\">BET<\/a>. He produces <a href=\"http:\/\/questionbridge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Question Bridge<\/a>, an art project about the experience of black men in America, and works with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sankofa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sankofa<\/a>, an organization dedicated to ending racial injustice.<\/p>\n<p>The child of a white mother and a black father, Mr. Williams <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=43049\" target=\"_blank\">told <em>The Guardian<\/em> last October<\/a> that his parents had shaped his activist roots, and said that being biracial allowed him to see both sides of a cultural divide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have access to rooms and information,\u201d he told the newspaper. \u201cI am white and I am also black. I am invisible man in a lot of these scenarios. I know how white people talk about black people.
