\u201cIt is latent racism.<\/strong> Nobody wants to be the descendant of black people,\u201d Luz Mar\u00eda Mart\u00ednez Montiel<\/a> says from her home in Cuernavaca<\/a>, the capital of Morelos<\/a> state in central Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mart\u00ednez Montiel says this was confirmed for her at an early age. When she was 9, she went to live with her paternal grandparents in Veracruz<\/a>, a state on the country\u2019s east coast. Even though there were people in her family who were dark-skinned, they didn\u2019t identify as descendants of Africans, she says.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Black\u2019 always was the \u2018other,\u2019<\/strong>\u201d says Mart\u00ednez Montiel, now 80 years old.<\/p>\n

Afro-descendants are defined as people whose ancestors were enslaved Africans who integrated into the places where they were transported, or to where they escaped, according to the Consejo Nacional para Prevenir la Discriminaci\u00f3n<\/a> (CONAPRED) the national council in charge of promoting policies for equality and inclusion…<\/p>\n
