She works to promote the recognition of Afro-descendants in Mexico.(Photo by Mayela S\u00e1nchez for GPJ Mexico)<\/em><\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\u201c<strong>It is latent racism.<\/strong> Nobody wants to be the descendant of black people,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luz_Mar%C3%ADa_Mart%C3%ADnez_Montiel\" target=\"_blank\">Luz Mar\u00eda Mart\u00ednez Montiel<\/a> says from her home in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cuernavaca\" target=\"_blank\">Cuernavaca<\/a>, the capital of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morelos\" target=\"_blank\">Morelos<\/a> state in central <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico\" target=\"_blank\">Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mart\u00ednez Montiel says this was confirmed for her at an early age. When she was 9, she went to live with her paternal grandparents in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Veracruz\" target=\"_blank\">Veracruz<\/a>, a state on the country\u2019s east coast.
