Reconstruction, which encompassed the decade following the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\" target=\"_blank\">Civil War<\/a>, is perhaps the most overlooked era in American history. It is the only period that doesn\u2019t have a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Park_Service\" target=\"_blank\">National Park Service<\/a> site commemorating it.<\/p>\n<p>Reconstruction, which witnessed the passage of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thirteenth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\">13th<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fourteenth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\">14th<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fifteenth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\">15th Amendments<\/a> and the first widespread political enfranchisement of African-Americans, is ripe with stories for filmmakers.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, since the racist celebration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ku_Klux_Klan\" target=\"_blank\">Ku Klux Klan<\/a> in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Birth_of_a_Nation\" target=\"_blank\">Birth of a Nation<\/a>\u201d (1915) and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gone_with_the_Wind_(film)\" target=\"_blank\">Gone With the Wind<\/a>\u201d (1939), no major Hollywood film has addressed the violence and drama of the era.<\/p>\n<p>Director <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gary_Ross\" target=\"_blank\">Gary Ross<\/a> has begun to fix this oversight by making a Reconstruction film disguised as a Civil War action flick&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.postandcourier.com\/20160703\/160709926\/free-state-of-jones-depicts-realities-of-reconstruction\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cFree State of Jones\u201d is the film Reconstruction historians have been waiting for.
