I really think most of us are ignorant or at the very least forgetful. Black people who look \u201cwhite\u201d is not a new phenomenon. In the United States, anyone with a trace of African blood, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=3208\" target=\"_blank\">no matter how remote, has been considered black<\/a>. Following the centuries-long evolution of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eurocentrism\" target=\"_blank\">Eurocentrism<\/a>, a concept geared to protecting white racial purity and social privilege, race has been constructed and regulated by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=3208\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cone-drop\u201d rule<\/a> (i.e., <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=86\" target=\"_blank\">hypodescent<\/a>), which obligated individuals to identify as black or white, in effect erasing mixed-race individuals from the social landscape. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_Plecker\" target=\"_blank\">Walter Plecker<\/a>, first registrar of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia\u2019s<\/a> Bureau of Vital Statistics, serving from 1912 to 1946, had brought racial policies to blood and bone level.<\/p>\n<p>Now, deep into the 21st century, the socially constructed racial ladder continues to keep people of color, including individuals of mixed race, from enjoying the same privileges as Euro-Americans.
