{"id":48143,"date":"2016-07-09T14:46:11","date_gmt":"2016-07-09T14:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=48143"},"modified":"2016-07-09T14:46:11","modified_gmt":"2016-07-09T14:46:11","slug":"msu-faculty-contribute-to-book-on-white-privilege","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=48143","title":{"rendered":"MSU faculty contribute to book on white privilege"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msstate.edu\/newsroom\/article\/2016\/07\/msu-faculty-contribute-book-white-privilege\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>MSU faculty contribute to book on white privilege<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msstate.edu\/newsroom\" target=\"_blank\">Mississippi State University<\/a><br \/>\n2016-07-01<\/p>\n<p>Contact: <strong><a href=\"mailto:allison.matthews@msstate.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Allison Matthews<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>STARKVILLE, Miss.\u2014Two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msstate.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Mississippi State<\/a> faculty members helped lead a literary effort examining the basis and scope of racial identity as an American social structure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.msstate.edu\/people\/stephen-middleton\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Middleton<\/a>, professor of history and director for African American Studies at MSU, along with associate professor of English and African American Studies <a href=\"http:\/\/www.english.msstate.edu\/faculty\/shaffer.html\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Shaffer<\/a>, served on the editing team for \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=47033\" target=\"_blank\">The Construction of Whiteness: An Interdisciplinary Analysis of Race Formation and the Meaning of a White Identity<\/a>.\u201d A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upress.state.ms.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">University Press of Mississippi<\/a> publication, the collection of essays specifically looks at the origins of white privilege and the various social, cultural, political and economic practices that underwrite its ideological influence in American society. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidroediger.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">David Roediger<\/a> of the University of Kansas also was co-editor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis book explores an old story in American culture,\u201d said Middleton, the project\u2019s lead editor. \u201cIt reviews a time when we thought about ourselves in certain ways, and the two categories that defined us more than any other were \u2018white\u2019 and \u2018black.\u2019 It\u2019s an old story of what we\u2019ve learned about our history and what we tell ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhiteness\u201d is a socially and legally constructed category, Middleton said, woven into the American psyche over time based on the need for cheap labor.
