Jolivette<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwpressblog.com\" target=\"_blank\">University of Washington Press Blog<\/a><br \/>\n2016-06-24<\/p>\n<p><em>In his new book <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=44000\" target=\"_blank\">Indian Blood: HIV &amp; Colonial Trauma in San Francisco\u2019s Two-Spirit Community<\/a><em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.sfsu.edu\/~ajoli\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew J. Jolivette<\/a> examines the correlation between mixed-race identity and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HIV\/AIDS\" target=\"_blank\">HIV\/AIDS<\/a> among Native American gay men and transgendered people, and provides an analysis of the emerging and often contested LGBTQ \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Two-Spirit\" target=\"_blank\">two-spirit<\/a>\u201d identification as it relates to public health and mixed-race identity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Prior to contact with European settlers, most Native American tribes held their two-spirit members in high esteem, even considering them spiritually advanced. However, after contact\u2014and religious conversion\u2014attitudes changed and social and cultural support networks were ruptured. This discrimination led to a breakdown in traditional values, beliefs, and practices, which in turn pushed many two-spirit members to participate in high-risk behaviors. The result is a disproportionate number of two-spirit members who currently test positive for HIV.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Using surveys, focus groups, and community discussions to examine the experiences of HIV-positive members of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisco\u2019s<\/a> two-spirit community, <\/em>Indian Blood<em> provides an innovative approach to understanding how colonization continues to affect American Indian communities and opens a series of crucial dialogues in the fields of Native American studies, public health, queer studies, and critical mixed-race studies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We spoke with Jolivette about his book, published this spring.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What inspired you to get into your field?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrew J. Jolivette<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Native_American_studies\" target=\"_blank\">American Indian studies<\/a> is in my blood.
