Langley dedicated a computing facility to Johnson in a ceremony today (May 5).<br \/>\nCredit: NASA<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NASA\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> honored 97-year-old mathematician <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katherine_Johnson\" target=\"_blank\">Katherine Johnson<\/a> today (May 5) by dedicating a building in her name at the space agency&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Langley_Research_Center\" target=\"_blank\">Langley Research Center<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hampton,_Virginia\" target=\"_blank\">Hampton, Virginia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers at today&#8217;s ceremony included <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia<\/a> congressmen and the mayor of Hampton, as well as former astronaut <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leland_D._Melvin\" target=\"_blank\">Leland Melvin<\/a>, who offered Johnson a Space Flight Awareness <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/heo\/sfa\/aac\/silver-snoopy-award\" target=\"_blank\">Silver Snoopy Award<\/a> that had been flown on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Space_Shuttle_Atlantis\" target=\"_blank\">space shuttle Atlantis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The building&#8217;s dedication today was fitting; it occurred on the 55th anniversary of the first American spaceflight by astronaut <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alan_Shepard\" target=\"_blank\">Alan Shepard<\/a>, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sub-orbital_spaceflight\" target=\"_blank\">suborbital trajectory<\/a> Johnson calculated during her time working at Langley&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;At Langley, Johnson performed calculations for airplane safety and rocket-launch experiments, starting in 1953 as part of a pool of female &#8220;computers&#8221;\u00a0and continuing until 1986. She worked by hand, and then with mechanical calculators \u2014 starting at the African-American-only <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Area_Computers\" target=\"_blank\">West Area Computers<\/a> but moving after two weeks to Langley&#8217;s flight research division.
