During Johnson&#8217;s time, he was regarded as a &#8220;bad nigger,&#8221; not only because he was articulate and handsome, but also because he beat his white rivals. It was a direct representation of black masculinity as a threat to white supremacy. In recent times, however, this kind of resistance has evolved. From track and field medal winners <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tommie_Smith\" target=\"_blank\">Tommie Smith <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Carlos\" target=\"_blank\">John Carlos<\/a> raising their fists as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1968_Olympics_Black_Power_salute\" target=\"_blank\">Black Power salute at the 1968 Olympics<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Women%27s_National_Basketball_Association\" target=\"_blank\">WNBA<\/a> players wearing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Lives_Matter\" target=\"_blank\">Black Lives Matter<\/a> T-shirts, black athletes are expanding their sportsmanship into political activism.<\/p>\n<p>Last Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco_49ers\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisco 49ers<\/a> quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colin_Kaepernick\" target=\"_blank\">Colin Kaepernick<\/a> refused to stand for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Star-Spangled_Banner\" target=\"_blank\">National Anthem<\/a> during a preseason game against the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_Bay_Packers\" target=\"_blank\">Green Bay Packers<\/a>.
