Black. Hispanic.<\/p>\n<p>For many people, this requires just another stroke of the pen, but for audiology freshman Karis Paul, there\u2019s a little more to it than that.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/El_Paso,_Texas\" target=\"_blank\">El Paso<\/a> \u2014 where the population is approximately 80 percent Hispanic \u2014 Karis, the daughter of an Indian father and a half-Irish, half-Austrian mother, found acceptance in a town that exudes racial diversity. However, Karis was seen as white, leaving her uncertain of her identity in a nation that didn\u2019t allow people to check multiple boxes in the census\u2019 race category until 2000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy situation was nothing that I was very aware of until I got a little older,\u201d Karis said. \u201cI would tell people I\u2019m Indian, and they\u2019d be like, \u2018What? Are you serious? Show me a picture of your dad.\u2019 They would say, \u2018You\u2019re so not Indian.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Only about 3 percent of students on campus identify as mixed race.
