{"id":49041,"date":"2016-09-10T21:16:07","date_gmt":"2016-09-10T21:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=49041"},"modified":"2016-09-10T21:16:07","modified_gmt":"2016-09-10T21:16:07","slug":"luck-o-the-irish-black-artists-from-the-emerald-isle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=49041","title":{"rendered":"Luck O\u2019 the Irish: Black Artists from the Emerald Isle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/soultrain.com\/2016\/03\/17\/luck-o-the-irish-black-artists-from-the-emerald-isle\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Luck O\u2019 the Irish: Black Artists from the Emerald Isle<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/soultrain.com\" target=\"_blank\">SoulTrain.com<\/a><br \/>\n2016-03-17<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wildhoneyrock\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rhonda Nicole<\/strong><\/a>, Managing Editor<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U2\" target=\"_blank\">U2<\/a> graced us with one of the greatest songs in the history of music, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5vye_tNZYL8\" target=\"_blank\">Still Haven\u2019t Found What I\u2019m Looking For<\/a>,\u201d and spammed everyone\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apple_Inc.\" target=\"_blank\">Apple<\/a> devices with an album many never asked for (2014\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Songs_of_Innocence_(U2_album)\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Songs of Innocence<\/em><\/a>). <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sin%C3%A9ad_O%27Connor\" target=\"_blank\">Sin\u00e9ad O\u2019Connor<\/a> teased as she sang \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bSEiFV5OC90\" target=\"_blank\">I Want Your (Hands On Me)<\/a>,\u201d teared up as she crooned \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=auUPqxI1vqg\" target=\"_blank\">Nothing Compares 2 U<\/a>,\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2dKdBlKgquw\" target=\"_blank\">tore up a photo of the pope<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Cranberries\" target=\"_blank\">The Cranberries<\/a> begged to let it \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=G6Kspj3OO0s\" target=\"_blank\">Linger<\/a>,\u201d while <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hozier_(musician)\" target=\"_blank\">Hozier<\/a> pleaded \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MYSVMgRr6pw\" target=\"_blank\">Take Me to Church<\/a>\u201d (interestingly, O\u2019Connor did as well, although it was a completely different song). Scan any pop or rock radio station, and you\u2019re bound to hear a tune or two from Irish musical acts. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Corrs\" target=\"_blank\">The Corrs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Frames\" target=\"_blank\">The Frames<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Enya\" target=\"_blank\">Enya<\/a>, and countless others have dominated the American musical landscape for decades, becoming as essential a part of popular music experience as your standard issue <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Garage_rock\" target=\"_blank\">garage band<\/a>-turned <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grammy_Award\" target=\"_blank\">Grammy<\/a> darling.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas other European countries have gifted us with a rather diverse cadre of acts of color\u2014British artists like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Omar_Lye-Fook\" target=\"_blank\">Omar Lye-Fook<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corinne_Bailey_Rae\" target=\"_blank\">Corinne Bailey Rae<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lianne_La_Havas\" target=\"_blank\">Lianne La Havas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Estelle_(musician)\" target=\"_blank\">Estelle<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brand_New_Heavies\" target=\"_blank\">Brand New Heavies<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ben_l%27Oncle_Soul\" target=\"_blank\">Ben l\u2019Oncle Soul<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Les_Nubians\" target=\"_blank\">Les Nubians<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corneille_(singer)\" target=\"_blank\">Corneille<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/France\" target=\"_blank\">France<\/a>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Belgium\" target=\"_blank\">Belgium\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zap_Mama\" target=\"_blank\">Zap Mama<\/a>, Jean-Louis Daulne, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Technotronic\" target=\"_blank\">Technotronic\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ya_Kid_K\" target=\"_blank\">Ya Kid K<\/a> (by way of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Democratic_Republic_of_the_Congo\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Republic of Congo<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ireland\" target=\"_blank\">Ireland<\/a>, not all that surprisingly, hasn\u2019t produced nearly as many. According to the 2006 Irish census, just around 1% of the country\u2019s population self-identified as black. Still, black actors, athletes, writers, and politicians have made an impact on Irish culture, be they Irish-born or immigrants from various parts of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Africa\" target=\"_blank\">Africa<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caribbean\" target=\"_blank\">Caribbean<\/a>.
