My brother\u2019s problem was that my grandfather hadn\u2019t given him traditional Puerto Rican <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arroz_con_gandules\" target=\"_blank\"><em>arroz con gandules<\/em><\/a>, but rather white rice and black-eyed peas.<\/p>\n<p>My mom always says that my brother continued to cry and ask, \u201cWhy are the beans looking at me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The story goes that my grandfather got upset and said, \u201cThis is Black food! You\u2019re Black! This is our people\u2019s food!\u201d My brother continued to cry, saying over and over again that he was Puerto Rican, and he wanted <em>real<\/em> rice and beans.
