Adopted as a child, much of her poetry and prose speaks to her own experience of not feeling entirely welcome in her own country. \u201cI wrote the poems that I wanted to read and I wrote about the experiences that I wanted to find,\u201d she says. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/author\/jeffrey-brown\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Brown<\/a> reports.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/author\/jwoodruff\/\" target=\"_blank\">JUDY WOODRUFF<\/a>: Now a Scottish literary talent whose work on identity and belonging, among other themes, has helped propel her to a unique role and a popular writer there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/author\/jeffrey-brown\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Brown<\/a> has our profile.<\/p>\n<p>JACKIE KAY, Scottish Poet &amp; Novelist: \u201cAnd this is my country, says the fisherwoman from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jura,_Scotland\">Jura<\/a>. Mine, too, says the child from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canna,_Scotland\" target=\"_blank\">Canna<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iona\">Iona<\/a>. Mine, too, says the Brain family. And mine, says the man from the Polish deli.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>JEFFREY BROWN: Jackie Kay wrote her poem \u201cThreshold\u201d for the Scottish Parliament and a special guest, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elizabeth_II\" target=\"_blank\">Queen Elizabeth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>JACKIE KAY: Let\u2019s blether some more about doors, revolving doors and sliding doors.<\/p>\n<p>JEFFREY BROWN: In the wake to of the recent Brexit vote to leave the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Union\" target=\"_blank\">European Union<\/a>, it was a plea to keep doors and the country open to the outside world. As Scotland\u2019s new national poet, Kay made it personal.<\/p>\n<p>JACKIE KAY: Scotland\u2019s changing faces \u2014 look at me!<\/p>\n<p>I like the idea of trying to change the face of Scotland. But, traditionally, when somebody thinks of somebody Scottish, they see a white man with red hair in a kilt and a \u2014 and they don\u2019t see me.<\/p>\n<p>JEFFREY BROWN: Jackie is the adopted daughter of John and Helen Kay. Her birth mother Scottish. Her father was then a Nigerian student studying in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>JACKIE KAY: I was an illegitimate child.
