Thomas Fortune Prophetically Predicts Today\u2019s Political Climate<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaihs.org\" target=\"_blank\">African American Intellectual History Society<\/a>\u00a0(AAIHS)<br \/>\n2016-09-24<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/afs.ku.edu\/shawn-alexander\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Shawn Leigh Alexander<\/strong><\/a>, Associate Professor of African and African American Studies and Director of the Langston Hughes Center<br \/>\n<em>University of Kansas<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaihs.org\/black-journalist-t-thomas-fortune-prophetically-predicts-todays-political-climate\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aaihs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/T-Thomas-Fortune.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Newspaper editor and former slave <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timothy_Thomas_Fortune\" target=\"_blank\">T. Thomas Fortune<\/a> formed the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Afro-American_League\" target=\"_blank\">National Afro-American League<\/a>, heralded as the first major all-black civil rights organization.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Civil rights activist and journalist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timothy_Thomas_Fortune\" target=\"_blank\">T. Thomas Fortune<\/a> was one of the most eloquent and instrumental voices of black America from 1880 to 1928. In 1883 Fortune, who was born into slavery in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florida\" target=\"_blank\">Florida<\/a>, relocated to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\">New York<\/a> and became the lead editor of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_York_Globe\" target=\"_blank\"><em>New York Globe<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(subsequently named the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Freeman\" target=\"_blank\">Freeman<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Age\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Age<\/em><\/a>), which quickly became the most widely read black paper of the era.<\/p>\n<p>Using the paper as his pulpit he became a prominent outspoken critic of southern racism, a promoter of racial solidarity and race pride, and an uncompromising advocate for civil and political rights of African Americans.
