But acting <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michel_Temer\" target=\"_blank\">President Michel Temer\u2019s<\/a> maneuvering in the months before the Games revealed a racial reality in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_America\" target=\"_blank\">South America\u2019s<\/a> most populous country that is anything but golden, Fordham Law School Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fordham.edu\/info\/23144\/tanya_hernandez\" target=\"_blank\">Tanya Hern\u00e1ndez<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looked like a racial utopia during the opening ceremonies, but if you look at the cabinet this president has put into place there\u2019s nary a dark-skinned person in the crowd,\u201d said Hern\u00e1ndez, associate director and head of global and comparative law programs and initiatives for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fordham.edu\/info\/25249\/center_on_race_law_and_justice\" target=\"_blank\">Center on Race, Law &amp; Justice at Fordham Law<\/a>. \u201cYou would think you were looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sweden\" target=\"_blank\">Sweden<\/a>, as opposed to Brazil, when you look at the cabinet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Temer\u2019s rapid assembly of lighter-skinned cabinet members in the wake of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dilma_Rousseff\" target=\"_blank\">President Dilma Rousseff\u2019s<\/a> suspension of powers in May highlights the implicit racial bias that exists in Brazil and other Latin American countries with large mixed-race populations. The so-called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=15098\" target=\"_blank\">pigmentocracy<\/a>\u201d considers \u201clighter as brighter\u201d and more capable of excelling in government and other high paying jobs, said Hern\u00e1ndez, author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=27563\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Racial Subordination in Latin America<\/em><\/a>.
