(Picture: Lorraine Maher Faissal)<\/em><\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>FOR the first time a photography exhibition celebrating mixed race Irish has gone on display in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.londonirishcentre.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">London Irish Centre<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Iamblirish\" target=\"_blank\">#IAmIrish<\/a> is a project founded by Lorraine Maher Faissal is running during <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_History_Month#United_Kingdom_.281987.29\" target=\"_blank\">Black History Month<\/a> and features 25 photographs of mixed race Irish people.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Maher Faissal says she hopes this exhibition becomes a way to celebrate diversity, and opening the dialogue on being mixed race and Irish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope this project is part of the solution in opening up dialogue in\u00a0understanding and to dispel the idea that if you are from a non-white community, you are automatically an immigrant,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c The project is a creative conversation mapping the roots, the lives and experiences of Irish people who happen to be mixed race,\u201d Ms Maher Faissal added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOctober is Black History Month so what better time to celebrate as an Irish woman of colour than here at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.londonirishcentre.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">London Irish Centre<\/a>?\u201d creator Lorraine Maher Faissal told The Irish Post&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/irishpost.co.uk\/i-shouldnt-defend-irishness-tackling-identity-struggles-faced-mixed-race-irish\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018I shouldn\u2019t have to defend my Irishness\u2019 \u2013 tackling the identity struggles faced by mixed race Irish The Irish Post 2016-10-10 Erica Doyle Higgins, Digital Reporter The above image of Lorraine Maher Faissal as a child is the main image of the #IAmIrish Project.
