But as she traversed the well-worn\u00a0paths of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yellowstone_National_Park\" target=\"_blank\">Yellowstone<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bryce_Canyon_National_Park\" target=\"_blank\">Bryce Canyon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zion_National_Park\" target=\"_blank\">Zion<\/a>, she began to\u00a0wonder about the footsteps of her ancestors, and how they\u00a0marked the very land she walked upon. From the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buffalo_Soldier\" target=\"_blank\">Buffalo\u00a0Soldiers<\/a> who safeguarded <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yosemite_National_Park\" target=\"_blank\">Yosemite<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sequoia_National_Park\" target=\"_blank\">Sequoia<\/a> to the\u00a0painful legacy of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internment_of_Japanese_Americans\" target=\"_blank\">Japanese-American internment camps<\/a>,\u00a0national parks hold some of the most important yet muted\u00a0narratives of the American identity.<\/p>\n<p>In her newest work, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=45245\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Trace: Memory, History, Race, and the\u00a0American Landscape<\/em><\/a>, Savoy explores how the country\u2019s still unfolding\u00a0history, and ideas of \u201crace,\u201d mark a person, a people, and\u00a0the land.
