She could not imagine that someone my color was an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ashkenazi_Jews\" target=\"_blank\">Ashkenazi Jew<\/a> too.<\/p>\n<p>Now at 34, every time my mother calls me, I think it\u2019s to tell me one of my cousins is dead. Or in jail.
