(Chris Pizzello\/Invision\u00a0via Associated Press)<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Just one month after opening its doors, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Museum of African American History and Culture<\/a> is establishing itself as a permanent stop\u00a0on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington,_D.C.\" target=\"_blank\">Washington<\/a> social circuit. There have been cocktail parties, galas, private dinners and now one of D.C.\u2019s favorite after-work pastimes \u2014 the movie screening.<\/p>\n<p>But not just any movie screening. On Monday, the museum hosted a sneak peek of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Loving_(2016_film)\" target=\"_blank\">Loving<\/a>\u201d in the 350-seat Oprah Winfrey Theater\u2013one of\u00a0many for the new institution. The choice wasn\u2019t coincidental, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/museums\/rhea-l-combs\/2016\/09\/19\/c2a1ae26-6d7b-11e6-9705-23e51a2f424d_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Rhea L. Combs<\/a>, the museum\u2019s photography\u00a0and film curator and head of its Earl W. and Amanda Stafford Center for African American Media Arts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShowing this film at the museum is important\u00a0because the story is symbolic of the mission of the museum,\u201d Combs said. \u201cIt demonstrates the link between people of all backgrounds and culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLoving\u201d tells the true story of Mildred and Richard Loving, an interracial couple from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia<\/a>\u00a0who fought for nearly a decade to have their marriage recognized as legal. Their historic case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which eventually <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=415\" target=\"_blank\">struck down laws against interracial marriage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 50 years later the movie\u2019s\u00a0stars, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ruth_Negga\" target=\"_blank\">Ruth Negga<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joel_Edgerton\" target=\"_blank\">Joel Edgerton<\/a>, walked the red carpet at the museum that houses artifacts from the couple they play on screen.
