Delmont<\/strong><\/a>, Professor of History<br \/>\n<em>Arizona State University<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blackquotidian.com\/anvc\/black-quotidian\/october-29-1949\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blackquotidian.com\/anvc\/black-quotidian\/media\/Pinky_1949_poster.jpg\" width=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On October 29, 1949, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Chicago_Defender\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Chicago Defender<\/em><\/a> published <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_Francis_White\" target=\"_blank\">Walter White&#8217;s<\/a> review of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elia_Kazan\" target=\"_blank\">Elia Kazan&#8217;s<\/a> film <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pinky_(film)\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Pinky<\/em><\/a>. The film, a drama about racial passing starring <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeanne_Crain\" target=\"_blank\">Jeanne Crain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ethel_Waters\" target=\"_blank\">Ethel Waters<\/a>, was the top-grossing film of 1949. White, who led the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Association_for_the_Advancement_of_Colored_People\" target=\"_blank\">NAACP<\/a> from 1931 until his death 1955, wrote, &#8220;I have never in all my life wanted so much to like a moving picture as much as I did &#8216;Pinky.&#8217; As I bought tickets at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nycago.org\/Organs\/NYC\/html\/RivoliTheatre.html\" target=\"_blank\">Rivoli Theatre<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\">New York<\/a> I hoped fervently that the praise of most of the New York critics and friends of mine, both colored and white, would be justified&#8230;Unhappily for me, I have to say that, as far as my judgement is concerned, [producer Darryl] <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darryl_F._Zanuck\" target=\"_blank\">Zanuck<\/a> has failed. Some new ground have been broken but they are mere scratches in the vast field of human relationships the picture sought to plow. Southern white police brutality and lechery are vividly and courageously exposed.
