In the case of <em>Loving<\/em>, that meant rural <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia<\/a> couple Richard and Mildred Loving, who married in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington,_D.C.\" target=\"_blank\">Washington, D.C.<\/a>, in 1958, were arrested in their home state, forced to move away or be jailed, and spent years fighting the racist law that affected them until the Supreme Court unanimously overturned it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact any miscegenation laws even existed, these are vestiges of slavery,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeff_Nichols\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Nichols<\/a>, director of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Loving_(2016_film)\" target=\"_blank\">Loving<\/a>,\u201d a new film based on the famous case starring <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joel_Edgerton\" target=\"_blank\">Joel Edgerton<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ruth_Negga\" target=\"_blank\">Ruth Negga<\/a>. \u201cAll of this speaks to the institutionalized racism in the South.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuess,\u201d which was released six months after the <em>Loving<\/em> decision, was, in its own way, meant to be a liberal antidote to situations like this.
