The story or Richard and Mildred Loving is told, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinema_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\">Hollywood<\/a>-style in the movie &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Loving_(2016_film)\" target=\"_blank\">Loving<\/a>.&#8221;<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>In 1963, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bernard_S._Cohen\" target=\"_blank\">Bernie Cohen<\/a>, a lawyer in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexandria,_Virginia\" target=\"_blank\">Alexandria<\/a>, was representing Richard and Mildred Loving, a mixed-race couple from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia<\/a> facing a predicament considered unthinkable today: They\u2019d been banished from the state for 25 years for violating its prohibition on interracial marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Living in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington,_D.C.\" target=\"_blank\">Washington, D.C.<\/a>, where interracial marriage was legal and where they were wed in 1958, the Lovings wanted to return home, to rural <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caroline_County,_Virginia\" target=\"_blank\">Caroline County<\/a>. To get there would require a long journey through the courts.<\/p>\n<p>Having lost the initial challenge in state court, Cohen consulted with his constitutional law professor at Georgetown University, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legacy.com\/obituaries\/tucson\/obituary.aspx?n=chester-james-antieau&amp;pid=20358350&amp;\" target=\"_blank\">Chester Antieau<\/a>. He introduced Cohen to another former student, Phil Hirschkop.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen and Hirschkop were alike: Both were Jewish boys from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklyn\" target=\"_blank\">Brooklyn<\/a> who had settled in segregationist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harry_F._Byrd\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Byrd\u2019s<\/a> Virginia. They also were liberals, committed to racial equality and social justice at a time when both could be scarce, especially in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_United_States\" target=\"_blank\">American South<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was Cohen\u2019s and Hirschkop\u2019s different legal backgrounds \u2014 the former was a trial lawyer; the latter, a civil rights lawyer \u2014 that would bring them together for the successful battle that concluded with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=415\" target=\"_blank\">1967 ruling by a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court<\/a> voiding Virginia\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=14135\" target=\"_blank\">anti-miscegenation statute<\/a> and those of 15 other states.<\/p>\n<p>The decision allowed the Lovings \u2014 he was white; she was black \u2014 to openly live out their days in Caroline County.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the 50th anniversary of a ruling on marriage equality that would presage the Supreme Court order <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Obergefell_v._Hodges\" target=\"_blank\">legalizing same-sex marriage in 2015<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Loving_(2016_film)\" target=\"_blank\">a new film by Jeff Nichols<\/a>, the writer-director, recounts the couple\u2019s ordeal&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyprogress.com\/opinion\/opinion-commentary-the-facts-behind-loving-law-and-loving\/article_70064794-a84f-11e6-aec9-cf59fca7eebf.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Opinion\/Commentary: The facts behind loving, law, and &#8216;Loving&#8217; The Daily Progress Charlottesville, Virginia 2016-11-13 Jeff E.
