Once the year in film began with #OscarsSoWhite<\/a>, was it coincidence that 2016 is closing \u2013 and 2017 beginning \u2013 with a raft of movies featuring people of colour? We have Hidden Figures<\/em><\/a>, Lion<\/em><\/a>, Fences<\/em><\/a>, and the magnificent Moonlight<\/em><\/a> to come. We recently had the release of Queen of Katwe<\/em><\/a>, and last Friday saw A United Kingdom<\/em><\/a>, Amma Asante\u2019s<\/a> follow-up to Belle<\/em><\/a>, appear in cinemas.<\/p>\n

The story focuses around the true-life romance between Seretse Khama<\/a> and Ruth Williams<\/a> (played by David Oyelewo<\/a> and Rosamund Pike<\/a>). Seretse, who is studying in London<\/a> in 1947, meets and falls in love with Ruth while in England<\/a>. Normally this would set the table for a garden variety rom-com<\/a>. But there\u2019s no chance of any \u201ccom\u201d, due to the complications the relationship brings. Seretse is the dauphin<\/a> to the throne of Bechuanaland<\/a> (a place under British control, before it was known as Botswana<\/a>), and he is black, while Ruth is white…<\/p>\n
