It\u2019s incredibly late because this was a complex episode to approach. As soon as the cold open ended with Bow\u2019s disdainful expression as she saw Junior\u2019s white girlfriend, my phone started going off. My mom texted, \u201cWow, they\u2019re really gonna do this?\u201d From a distance, \u201cBeing Bow-racial\u201d may seem like a problematic, racist, weird episode of <em>Black-ish<\/em>. Why would Bow\u2014an educated, wealthy, tolerant doctor\u2014care that her son is dating a white girl? But, in reality, the episode addresses some of the most guarded, internal secrets within the black community\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Discrimination_based_on_skin_color\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">colorism<\/a>, interracial dating, the black man\u2019s fear of white women, and everyone\u2019s fear of black women. \u201cBeing Bow-racial\u201d is <em>Black-ish<\/em> finally addressing the \u201cish\u201d that looms heavily over its title and the results are stellar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing Bow-racial\u201d is an episode that feels incredibly personal to me, which might make it difficult to be objective, but it\u2019s truly a story I\u2019ve never seen given such attention on broadcast TV. The second Junior introduced Megan, I found myself making the same face as Bow for the same reasons\u2014she\u2019s white. This isn\u2019t because Bow and I are racists, in fact, the episode does an amazing job of pointing out that Bow\u2019s issue is an internal issue that stems from her own conflicting feelings and uncertainty around her blackness.
