{"id":50415,"date":"2016-12-03T02:58:42","date_gmt":"2016-12-03T02:58:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=50415"},"modified":"2016-12-03T22:55:53","modified_gmt":"2016-12-03T22:55:53","slug":"a-picture-of-her-kentucky-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=50415","title":{"rendered":"A Picture of Her \u2018Kentucky\u2019 Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rafu.com\/2016\/11\/a-picture-of-her-kentucky-home\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>A Picture of Her \u2018Kentucky\u2019 Home<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rafu.com\" target=\"_blank\">The Rafu Shimpo: Los Angeles Japanese Daily News<\/a><br \/>\n2016-11-27<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mikey Hirano Culross<\/strong><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"302\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rafu.com\/2016\/11\/a-picture-of-her-kentucky-home\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rafu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/leah-nanako-winkler-for-web.jpg\" width=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small><em><a href=\"https:\/\/leahwinkler.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Leah Nanako Winkler<\/a> was born in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Japan\" target=\"_blank\">Japan<\/a>, raised in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lexington,_Kentucky\" target=\"_blank\">Lexington, Kentucky<\/a>, and now lives in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\">New York City<\/a>.<\/em><\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leahwinkler.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Leah Nanako Winkler<\/a> arrived more than flustered, bounding into a dressing room at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eastwestplayers.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">East West Players<\/a> after having endured what should have been a 20-minute trek from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Universal_City,_California\" target=\"_blank\">Universal City<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Little_Tokyo,_Los_Angeles\" target=\"_blank\">Little Tokyo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Winkler, meet the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U.S._Route_101_in_California\" target=\"_blank\">101<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The evening\u2019s performance of her new play, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eastwestplayers.org\/on-the-stage\/kentucky\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kentucky<\/a>,\u201d was barely 90 minutes from curtain, and Winkler had plenty of tasks beforehand, including a quick chat with <em>The Rafu<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Now a hard-studying MFA student in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklyn\" target=\"_blank\">Brooklyn<\/a>, Winkler has composed an honest look at family, with all its glory as well as warts, drawing on her experiences growing up in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lexington,_Kentucky\" target=\"_blank\">Lexington, Kentucky<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Her play follows Hiro, a woman on the verge of big-city career success whose homecoming is driven by the desire to dissuade her born-again sister from entering into a marriage that Hiro finds unsavory.
