She is pointing to her chipped green nail polish and apologizing for her eyebrows. She cut her hair herself, she says, before asking a professional to tidy it up. Earlier today she went to get her passport renewed. \u201cMaybe . . . you could\u2014blend?\u201d the photographer said, gesturing around his face. She took a look and realized she had been quite slapdash with her bronzer and powder.<\/p>\n<p>By lunchtime, there\u2019s no trace of this\u2014with her huge, doll-like eyes and closely cropped hair, she is as glamorous as a thirties aviator in Paige jeans and an olive bomber jacket\u2014but it\u2019s easy enough to imagine Negga dismissing vanity as a fool\u2019s game. Her gift for self-mockery and her appetite for the craic\u2014an Irish expression for fun or gossip or high jinks\u2014are matched only by her levels of propulsion: Her neat, tiny frame always seems to move forward at great speed.<\/p>\n<p>When director <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeff_Nichols\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Nichols<\/a> was trying to get financing for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Loving_(2016_film)\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Loving<\/em><\/a>, in which Negga and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joel_Edgerton\" target=\"_blank\">Joel Edgerton<\/a> star as Mildred and Richard Loving\u2014the real-life interracial couple whose quest to be considered legally married in 1958 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia<\/a> became a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=415\" target=\"_blank\">landmark civil-rights case<\/a>\u2014he kept hearing the same thing: \u201cWho\u2019s Ruth Negga?\u201d Few people are asking that now, but even so, Negga is not offended. \u201cI\u2019ve been working.
