{"id":5064,"date":"2010-02-07T20:08:14","date_gmt":"2010-02-07T20:08:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=5064"},"modified":"2011-08-06T23:11:51","modified_gmt":"2011-08-06T23:11:51","slug":"prejudice-inspires-filmmaker-to-discover-afro-german-roots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=5064","title":{"rendered":"Prejudice inspires filmmaker to discover Afro-German roots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.idsnews.com\/news\/story.aspx?id=73134\" target=\"_blank\">Prejudice inspires filmmaker to discover Afro-German roots<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.idsnews.com\">Indiana Daily Student<\/a><br \/>\nIndiana University<br \/>\n2010-01-24<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"mailto:abbylieb@indiana.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Abby Liebenthal<\/a><\/strong>, Staff Reporter<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roots-germania.com\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mo-asumang-management.com\/uploads\/4\/4\/4\/9\/4449361\/5997194.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt all started with a public threat on my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within the first few minutes of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mo-asumang.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mo Asumang<\/a>\u2019s documentary \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.roots-germania.com\" target=\"_blank\">Roots Germania<\/a>,\u201d students, faculty and Bloomington residents became part of a search for the director\u2019s identity&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Asumang said the journey to find her identity was driven by a desire to understand where racism toward <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afro-Germans\" target=\"_blank\">Afro-Germans<\/a> originated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like a job to search for identity,\u201d Asumang said. \u201cIt starts when you\u2019re born in Germany \u2013 it\u2019s not so easy to be part of that country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film was triggered by a song, written by a Neo-Nazi band the \u201cWhite Aryan Rebels,\u201d that calls for Asumang\u2019s murder.
