Tisserand presented a slideshow on the book for the first time, and it will be presented again on Thursday at Princeton\u2019s Labyrinth Books with Patrick \u201cMutts\u201d McDonnell along for the ride \u2013 an event I highly recommend if you are into Herriman, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Krazy_Kat\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Krazy Kat<\/em><\/a> or comic strip history. Or really, just history&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Tissarand has done a ton of research on the book, but the key element is defining Herriman\u2019s own heritage as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creole_peoples#Louisiana\" target=\"_blank\">Creole<\/a> man from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans\" target=\"_blank\">New Orleans<\/a> whose family moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles<\/a> when he was only 10 so that they could <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\">pass for white<\/a> in a world of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=4781\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Crow laws<\/a> and blatant racism.
