United in their affection for the harmonising American <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doo-wop\" target=\"_blank\">doo-wop<\/a> band, within a year of their meeting at a post-war <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a> dance hall the Ink Spots\u2019 1946 hit could have been their anthem.<\/p>\n<p>Their black-white romance offended not only their families, but the British and South African governments and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Church_of_England\" target=\"_blank\">Church of England<\/a>, which all aggressively opposed their 1948 marriage.
