COMMENTARY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do you take issue with the following declaration?<\/p>\n

\u201cRace is real, race matters, and race is the foundation of identity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Let’s break it down. Many people are aware that the concept of race has no biological validity; that it\u2019s a social construct, like gender or money, which are “real” only in so far as we treat them as such. So, in response to the first part of the thesis, many\u00a0people might\u00a0say, \u201cRace is a social construct with very real effects.\u201d As such, race certainly matters in myriad ways. As for\u00a0race as the\u00a0foundation of identity,\u00a0many\u00a0people might\u00a0reason that, since\u00a0identity is multi-faceted, race is, indeed, among the factors that comprise it…<\/p>\n
