From 1913 to 1944, a panel called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Krazy_Kat\" target=\"_blank\">Krazy Kat<\/a>\u201d ran in newspapers across the country and counted \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peanuts\" target=\"_blank\">Peanuts<\/a>\u201d creator <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_M._Schulz\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Schulz<\/a> and the poet <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E._E._Cummings\" target=\"_blank\">E.E. Cummings<\/a> among its fans. The strip featured beautiful backgrounds and simply sketched cat and mouse characters that switched between philosophical dialog and slapstick situations\u2014the mouse was forever trying to hit the cat with a brick. But the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans\" target=\"_blank\">New Orleans<\/a>-born artist behind the drawings, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Herriman\" target=\"_blank\">George Herriman<\/a>, was a private man whose life was a mystery. That is until now, with the release of the illustrator\u2019s biography,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=50200\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Krazy: George\u00a0Herriman, a Life in Black and White<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Author <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaeltisserandauthor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Tisserand<\/a> (also a New Orleanian) spent ten years researching this thorough work that chronicles not only the career of the twentieth century Southern artist, but Herriman\u2019s big secret: He was born to a prominent <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creole_peoples#Louisiana\" target=\"_blank\">Creole<\/a> family in New Orleans and spent his adult years <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cpassing\u201d for white<\/a> at the newspapers where he worked in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\">New York<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles<\/a>. At the time, living as a black man would have threatened his livelihood, his home, and his relationships.
