{"id":50840,"date":"2016-12-21T19:27:31","date_gmt":"2016-12-21T19:27:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=50840"},"modified":"2016-12-21T19:27:31","modified_gmt":"2016-12-21T19:27:31","slug":"new-book-confronts-colorism-in-21st-century-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=50840","title":{"rendered":"New Book Confronts Colorism in 21st Century America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/nbcblk\/review-same-family-different-colors-confronting-colorism-america-s-diverse-n694746\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>New Book Confronts Colorism in 21st Century America<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\" target=\"_blank\">NBC News<\/a><br \/>\n2016-12-21<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/blackgirlonmars\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Lesley-Ann Brown<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Masque_of_Blackness\" target=\"_blank\">The Masque of Blackness<\/a>&#8221; (1605) is an early <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Literature_in_English#Jacobean_literature\" target=\"_blank\">Jacobean<\/a> era &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Masque\" target=\"_blank\">masque<\/a>&#8221; \u2014 a popular form of 16th &amp; 17th century amateur dramatic theatre \u2014 and is quite possibly the first instance in English literature where the topic of skin color is not only discussed, but where Blackness is cast in an unfavorable light.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/article\/244552\" target=\"_blank\">Project Muse<\/a> writes, &#8220;In The Masque of Blackness (1605) and its plot sequel &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Masque_of_Beauty\" target=\"_blank\">The Masque of Beauty<\/a>&#8221; (1608), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ben_Jonson\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Jonson<\/a> represents the transformation of African people to Europeans when they travel to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/England\" target=\"_blank\">England<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Africa\" target=\"_blank\">Africa<\/a>.&#8221; The period in which it was commissioned and produced coincides with England&#8217;s expansion of her Atlantic journey into slavery, sugar and empire and so it ought not be underscored the role literature is enlisted to play in terms of the color hierarchy it was meant to entrain. The masque, commissioned by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anne_of_Denmark\" target=\"_blank\">Anne of Denmark<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queen_consort\" target=\"_blank\">queen consort<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_VI_and_I\" target=\"_blank\">King James I<\/a>, was also one of the first documented cases of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blackface\" target=\"_blank\">blackface<\/a>&#8221; a practice so novel at the time that many of the English court found it disturbing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;In &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=45912\" target=\"_blank\">Same Family, Different Colors: Confronting Colorism in America&#8217;s Diverse Families<\/a>,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/loritharps.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lori Tharps<\/a>, an assistant professor of journalism at Temple University and author of &#8220;Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America&#8221; and &#8220;Kinky Gazpacho: Life, Love &amp; Spain,&#8221; Tharps gives voice to a dynamic that as she notes, &#8220;\u2026doesn&#8217;t even exist. Not officially. It <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autocorrection\" target=\"_blank\">autocorrects<\/a> on my computer screen. It does not appear in the dictionary.
