In \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=50622\" target=\"_blank\">My President Was Black<\/a>,\u201d Coates, a Black thought leader and <em>New York Times<\/em>-bestselling author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/220290\/between-the-world-and-me-by-ta-nehisi-coates\/9780812993547\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Between the World and Me<\/em><\/a>, riffs on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\">President Obama<\/a> in a potent, yet lacking, meditation on race, racism, and the identity politics of tightrope dancing as the leader of the free world.<\/p>\n<p>In this and previous essays, Coates examines the kaleidoscopic nature of POTUS44\u2019s racial identity through a strictly Black lens.
