Indian schmindian! He\u2019s Tex Boyden, who reads the <\/em>New Yorker<em>, sips Martinis and makes his living selling beads to the white natives<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When Erl Boyden was five years old, his Uncle Richard took him to a wild-west show in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ottawa\" target=\"_blank\">Ottawa<\/a> and introduced him to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buffalo_Bill\" target=\"_blank\">Buffalo Bill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Excited by tom-toms and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_cry\" target=\"_blank\">war cries<\/a> and trailing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_bonnet\" target=\"_blank\">war bonnets<\/a>, little Erl fell in love with Indians on the spot. He took to cutting out pictures of Indians, improvising Indian costumes, collecting Indian souvenirs. His bedroom in the old Boyden home on Mackenzie Avenue, in the shadow of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parliament_Hill\" target=\"_blank\">Parliament Buildings<\/a>, became a litter of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bow_and_arrow\" target=\"_blank\">bows and arrows<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buckskins\" target=\"_blank\">buckskins<\/a>. His most treasured possession was a five-foot cotton <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tipi\" target=\"_blank\">tepee<\/a> his aunt Bertha O&#8217;Donaghue sent him from New York. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Last_of_the_Mohicans\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Last of the Mohicans<\/em><\/a> was his favorite book and he and his two brothers saved their nickels to see <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Broncho_Billy_Anderson\" target=\"_blank\">Broncho Billy Anderson<\/a> on Saturday afternoons at the neighborhood movie house, and <em>Custer&#8217;s Last Stand<\/em>, a stage show that came to Ottawa&#8217;s Grand Opera House in 1907. School bored young Erl\u2014his thoughts were elsewhere. He saw himself as a white boy who by his knowledge of hunting and outdoor lore is adopted by an Indian chief and given a place of honor in the tribe.<\/p>\n<p>Boyden is sixty years old now, but he&#8217;s still playing Indian. All summer long you can find him sitting beside the highway at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lake_of_Bays\" target=\"_blank\">Dwight<\/a>, a small resort town 160 miles north of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toronto\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto<\/a> on the road to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Algonquin_Provincial_Park\" target=\"_blank\">Algonquin Park<\/a>, under a sign that says, \u201cUgh!
